During the recent teleseminar on which I was interviewed, I talked about the number of LED light strings that can be connected in a row. I contacted a manufacturer to ask this question which was placed a couple years back. UL has recently published a new standard.
Many incandescent Christmas light strings indicate a maximum of a three string connection. Underwriter’s Laboratory or UL recently adopted a new standard for the end to end connection of LED Christmas lights. The new standard allows for the end to end connection of up to 220 total watts on one 15 amp circuit. The change of the standard from using the number of strings for the unit of measure to total watts is much more sensible since LED Christmas lights use much less energy than standard incandescent Christmas lights. For example, based on this UL standard, www.holidayLEDs.com indicates up to 100 strings can be connected when using one of their multi-color, 17.5 foot, 35 bulb, indoor/outdoor products!
The large number of strings that can be connected end to end will make the task of outdoor holiday lighting a little easier. Plus, because LEDs use much less energy than incandescent lights, switching to LED holiday lighting could solve circuit overload problems experienced in past holiday seasons.
