More Ideas For Avoiding Kitchen Design Problems

Microwave ooops

Before building a new home or remodeling your kitchen, here’s two more kitchen design issue to consider:

3.    Misguided Microwave: All side-hinging microwaves open to the left. In other words, the door is hinged on the left and swings open to the left. Keep this in mind whether you’re planning a built-in or free-standing model to avoid the scenario shown in the photo to the right.

Because there is no counter space to the right of this microwave, hot food must be removed from the oven and carried around the open door. This is both awkward and dangerous.

4.    Sorry Shelving: Deep and narrow fixed shelving only works for storage of large items. Small things just get lost and forgotten in the back – they’re hard to reach and they’re hard to see.

Pull-out pantry shelvesIf deep and narrow shelving can’t be avoided, improve the flexibility of this design by incorporating pullout shelving, as shown here, to allow access to all the items stored on the shelves. Pullouts are like very shallow drawers with small sides; these sides keep items in place when shelves are pulled forward or pushed back.

Throughout this week, I’ll list off six more kitchen design ooops to avoid in your new kitchen design.
