Cleaning Up Laundry Room Design Problems

by tracy on July 7, 2009

What does your laundry room look like on laundry day?  Are you sorting clothes on the floor?  Do you wish you had a place to hang items fresh from the dryer?  Is the master bed serving as your folding table?

Many of us use our laundry rooms on a daily basis, but more often than not, this area of the home is swept under the rug during the design process.  To make sure this doesn’t happen to you, let’s look at some tips that will help you create a laundry room that truly meets your needs.

First of all, a functional laundry room should include hanging space for long and short items, a folding area, a method for sorting clothing, a laundry tub sink with an integrated or separate pullout spray faucet, storage for laundry supplies, a location for a waste basket, and a place for a hand towel or paper towel rack.

The photograph shows one functional wall of a very simple laundry room.laundry-room-simple-design

This area includes short hanging space above the laundry tub sink, long hanging space to the left of the tub, an open area above the washer for easy access to detergents and fabric softeners, upper cabinets for storage, and a paper towel rack next to the sink cabinet. The waste basket is located under the sink.

If you’re short on square footage, there are many products designed to provide hanging and sorting capabilities in very small spaces. For example, laundry hangers that provide quick hanging space and collapse neatly against your wall when not in use or wall-mounted laundry sorting products that don’t take up floor space. Visit www.detailedsolutions.net for examples of both of these products.

Later this week, we’ll talk more about simplifying a functional laundry room space.
